Wesley “Cpt Wes” Sparrer Freeman, 81, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018 with his beloved wife Nellie by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Frances Freeman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nellie; four children, Donnie Freeman (Suzanne), Joy Davis, Daryl Freeman (Teresa), and Jennifer May (Cris); six grandchildren, Ryan, Krystal, Joshua (Allie), Amanda, Daniel, and Cameron; two great-grands, Dakota and Payton; siblings Annie Roundy (Frank), Bertha Ward (Jerry), and Edward Freeman; and many other loving family members.
Cpt Wes was a proud graduate of Poquoson High Class of 1956, and obtained his Associates in Applied Fire Science from TNCC (Cum Laude). He was a Navy Veteran, serving aboard the USS Saratoga. He also worked at the NN Shipyard prior to joining the Hampton Fire Department where he retired as a Captain after 30 years of service.
Cpt Wes was a lifetime member of Tabernacle UMC, and the Poquoson Volunteer Fire Department. He also belonged to the Peninsula Saltwater Sport Fisherman’s Association, JOUAM, and Lafayette Gun Club. His passions were fishing with friends and family, hunting quail with his dogs, dancing with his wife, and adventuring to Long Beach and Vegas with his wife and kids.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 9, 6:30-8:00 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. A Celebration of Cpt Wes’ life will be held at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Poquoson at 2:00 PM, Nov. 10, led by Rev. James N. Earley II. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
