Ann P. Bowie, 84, was called Home February 20, 2021. A native of Guthrie, Kentucky she has been a resident of Newport News, VA for the past 53 years. Ann formally taught high school math, bookkeeping and typing then worked as a supervisor with the City of Hampton Department of Social Services for more than 20 years. She graduated from Guthrie High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Austin Peay University with minors in Business and English. Ann went on to earn her Master's of Art in Social Sciences with a minor in business from George Peabody University.
Ann enjoyed attending local military concerts, symphonies and Southampton Woman's Birthday Club. She was actively involved in Concerned Denbigh Citizens for many years.
She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She attended many of their sporting events. Ann was recently blessed with two great-grandsons and has a granddaughter due in June.
Preceded in death by her parents, William Lawson and Mary Alice Nabb Poindexter, Sr.; brother, William Lawson Poindexter, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sheron Thomas, Ann is survived by her children, Mike Thomas (Kim), Debby Thomas Oakley (Ronnie); grandchildren, Josh Thomas (Katie), Casey Oakley (Alex) and Mitch Oakley (Savannah); great-grandchildren, Colby Oakley Waltrip, Beckham Oakley Waltrip and Ryleigh Ann Oakley.
The family would like to sincerely thank her wonderful neighbors, friends, nurses and doctors that were there for her with love. In lieu of flowers, expressions of condolences can be made to the American Cancer Society.
