Anthony (Tony) Caterine, M.D. Obituary

Anthony James Caterine (Tony), beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, and psychiatrist, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on January 9, 2025, at age 62. Born on Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada, Tony was the first-born son of Dr. James Michael Caterine, a general surgeon, and Barbara Ann Caterine (Bauer), a nurse and homemaker. Raised in and around Des Moines, IA, he graduated as class president from Dowling High School in 1980.

Tony attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1984, and Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, where he earned his MD in 1988. While in medical school, he married Colleen, the love of his life and a registered nurse. Together, they built a family, and a life dedicated to caring for others.

After completing his residency in psychiatry at the University of Florida, Tony began his career in Peoria, IL, before moving to Hampton Roads, VA, in 2002. For over two decades, he served as a consultation psychiatrist at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Tony was honored to work alongside talented colleagues whose expertise and compassion enriched his practice. He took great pride in providing holistic care to patients and families and assisting physicians with complex cases.

Tony's passions extended beyond medicine. He was an adventurer at heart, enjoying biking, hiking, kayaking, and gaming. He cherished time with his wife, Colleen; their four children-Joe, Emma, Sam, and Grace; his children-in-law, Kelly, Ashlee, and Brendan; and the newest member of the family, his grandson Dylan. Family gatherings were full of joy, often featuring board games, frisbee or four square, shared meals sometimes followed by dessert topped with a mountain of whipped cream, and a re-watching of one of Tony's favorite action movies.

Tony and his siblings supported each other through life's milestones and obstacles, celebrating triumphs and offering comfort during difficult times. Tony deeply grieved the loss of his mother Barbara in 2012, with whom he shared the qualities of bravery, resoluteness, and a quirky sense of humor. He had an especially close bond with his father, James, with whom he could discuss anything under the sun. Between visits with his out-of-state siblings and father, Tony stayed closely connected through calls, texts, emails, Zoom cocktail parties, and Notre Dame football-watching sessions.

Known for his vibrant personality, Tony frequently entertained family and friends with his humorous alternate song lyrics and expressive dance moves. His laughter was contagious, and his love for exploring philosophical questions inspired thoughtful conversations. Tony's joy for life and his deep love for family and friends will remain a lasting legacy.

Tony is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Colleen; his father James, and James' wife, Cena; his children, grandson, and children-in-law; his siblings Becky, John (Mindy), Matt (Lisa), and Gina; nieces, nephews, in-laws and a loving extended family. He was predeceased by his mother, Barbara, in 2012.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, healthcare providers, and staff at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Riverside Peninsula Cancer Institute, and Riverside Hospice Care. Their expertise, compassionate care, and friendship buoyed Tony and Colleen's spirits during his illness and will never be forgotten.

Details about a memorial service and celebration of Tony's life will be shared soon. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to Mental Health Virginia (https://mentalhealthvirginia.org/) or the Riverside Foundation (https://www.riversideonline.com/en/foundation).
