Archie “Skipper” Graves Ferguson, 93 passed away at home on April 6, 2026, after a long illness.
He was born July 17, 1932 and a lifelong resident of Poquoson, VA. Skipper was known across the community for many things, mostly his history/stories of Poquoson. He had an exceptional memory of his family tree/heritage and loved researching his family “Ferguson” name. Skipper was mainly known for his skills as a diesel mechanic. He knew more about Detroit Diesels than the manufacturer. He took pride in helping the watermen with their engines, whether it be for their livelihood or boat racing.
Skipper graduated from Poquoson High School in 1950. He joined the Army in 1953. He returned to Poquoson and entered a short career at Newport News Ship Yard. He married Wilma Ferguson in 1957. He started his federal career at Fort Monroe in 1960 and retired in 1987 from Fort Eustis. He continued to work for Northrup Grumman until he was 72yo.
He was very proud of his Masonic legacy. He was initiated June 23, 1992; passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on September 15, 1992 and raised to Master Mason on October 8, 1992. He became a life Member in Perpetuity in 1997.
He served as Worshipful Master of Poquoson Lodge #49 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in 2000 and served as District Deputy Grand Master in 2008.
Skipper is preceded in death by his father, Melvin Sinclair “Sinky” Ferguson and mother, Nina Ernestine “Teen” Ferguson. Survived by his wife of 68 years, Wilma. His daughters, Deedie Weaver (Courtney Gensler); Belinda (Mike) Ramsey; Son-in-Law Benjamin Weaver, Jr; 4 grandchildren, Andrew Weaver (Iney); Lucas Weaver (Tesia); Jacob Weaver (Jessica) and Alyssa Ramsey. He had 14 great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by nephews, Sal “ChumBob” Cannella III and Larry (Mary) Neil Diaz and Tony Diaz. His nieces Dana Mackey (Dan); Lelia Sutton (Richard); Lynette Felty; Kim (Kenny) Brady; Sandra (Micheal) Dean.
The family would like to acknowledge the ‘watermen’ community for indulging Skipper with fresh seafood on a regular basis! The family also wishes extend a special thank you to Dr. James (Clif) Tinsely for his compassionate care to Skipper.
Services will be held at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson. Viewing will be April 9th at 12:00, followed by a service at 1:00pm.
