Benjamin "Ben" Matthew Leeming (26) of Newport News, VA, passed away on January 27, 2020, in one of his favorite places: on the water with his friends. He is survived by his mother, Judy Leeming of Newport News, VA, father and step-mother, Rick & Sheila Leeming of Lynchburg, VA, his siblings, Adam & Kate Flack of Charleston, WV, and Andy, Brooke, and Amelia Leeming, of Lynchburg, VA. He is also survived by his grandparents, Patricia Leeming of Lynchburg, VA, Debbie & Eldredge Leeming of Vero Beach, FL, and Jim & Ann Wharton of Lynchburg, VA, as well as his niece Arden, nephew Atlas, and many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art & Bettie Matthews.
Ben was born on March 3, 1993, at The Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. His first six years were spent on Meadowridge Drive, growing and playing with his older siblings, enjoying dress-up (from police officer, to army man, and even letting his big sister dress him as a lady-in-waiting). Ben was the family ham. He was always playing pranks and making us laugh.
One of Ben's many passions was playing the drums. From when he was 3 years old, he loved drumming on his grandfather's set to Dixieland tunes. He was a snare drummer in the Poquoson High School marching band, and became obsessed with Drum Corps and learned lots of tricks via YouTube, including stick tricks à la Keith Moon.
In addition to making music, Ben loved to dance. He joined a dance troupe and performed the lead role in a Michael Jackson show.
Ben was a lover of everything outdoors, always ready for the next adventure. He was someone who could light up the room with just his smile and the positive energy that radiated off of him. His relationship with his family and friends was his number one priority. He never hesitated to drop what he was doing to be there for those who needed him. All were blessed by the light he brought to our lives.
A memorial service is set for 6 PM at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson on Friday, January 31. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Poquoson High School Marching Band.
