Bonnie Harris Ward, born May 29, 1935, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, June 7, 2023, having been surrounded by the love of her family for the duration of her illness and life. She had just excitedly celebrated her 88th birthday.
Bonnie, a native of Louisburg, North Carolina, met the love of her life and best friend, Percy F. Ward while attending Gold Sand High School in 1952. With the permission of Bonnie’s parents, they eloped and moved to Poquoson, Virginia, where they began their careers and remained happily married for 65 years. Their love story was interrupted when Percy went to be with Jesus in July of 2018. Bonnie missed him every day of her remaining five years without him.
Bonnie was a strong woman of faith. She loved Jesus, and He loved her. Her kindness, prayerful perseverance, determination, and humor; touched the lives of many. Her humility and quiet presence never allowed her to put herself first, an endearing quality to many. Her amazing cooking and creativity won over the rest.
She is survived by her Son, Percy Ward Jr and his wife, Kathy, and her Daughter, Angela Ward Costello, and treasured Grandson, Nicholas H.W. Costello, sister Marie Hudson of Louisburg, NC; Sister-in-Law, Shirley Ward of Poquoson; Sister-in-Law, Geneva Harris of Henderson, NC; Brother-in-Law, Coles Buchannan of Gwynn's Island, VA and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members, friends, and neighbors.
Bonnie was predeceased in death by her parents, Benjamin and Luna Harris, and her Brother, Lawerence Harris.
A Celebration of Bonnie’s Life will be held on Monday, June 12 at 3 pm at the Mausoleum Chapel at Parklawn Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia.
In place of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Hospice House of Williamsburg. They were an answer to prayer during a very difficult time. Their exceptional staff and care team provided comfort, compassion, and care beyond what we knew or thought possible. We remain exceptionally grateful for their help.
