In Loving Memory of Colonel E. James Hardenbrook

Colonel E. James Hardenbrook (“Jim”), US Air Force (Retired), passed away June 15, 2026 in the loving embrace of his wife of 63 years and one true love, Kathy. He leaves behind a distinguished legacy of military service, a deep devotion to his family, and a life enriched by his many passions. Jim was born on February 17, 1939, in Rochester, New York and was the son of Dr. Edward Graves Hardenbrook and Elsie Dwyer Hardenbrook. He was born the third of four children and was the eldest son.

Jim paired his lifelong dedication to his country with numerous academic pursuits. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government from the University of Buffalo in New York in 1962 and a Master of Science degree in public administration from Auburn University in Alabama in 1975. Additionally, he was recognized as a distinguished graduate in residence from both the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

Jim’s remarkable 27-year military career began when he entered Officer Training School in November of 1962. Commissioned a second lieutenant in February 1963, he was sent to Pilot Training at Reese AFB. Upon graduating he received his number one choice of assignment, the F-4 Phantom. Three combat tours in Southeast Asia and an assignment to what was then West Germany followed. Flying out of Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam and Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, he would amass 480 combat hours in the F-4. In 1974, Jim attended the Air Force Command and Staff College and was assigned to the Tactical Air Command Staff at Langley AFB in Virginia. Following the staff tour, he returned to the cockpit, transitioning from the F-4 to the F-15 Eagle. In 1978 he was assigned to the 27th Tactical Fighter Squadron and then to the 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron, both part of the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB. In 1980, he was named Commander of the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing. His dedication to the First Fighter Wing and its veterans began here but continued throughout his life and most notably in retirement where he served as President Emeritus of the First Fighter Wing Association. Jim graduated from the Air War College in 1983. He was promoted to Colonel the following year and assigned to the Pentagon, where he would eventually serve as the Chief of the Fighter Program Division. It was here that he developed relationships that would persist throughout his subsequent civilian career. In November of 1984 he returned to flying the F-15 as the Vice Wing Commander of the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, Holloman AFB, New Mexico. His career then came full circle when he returned to flying the F-4 as the Wing Commander of the 35th Tactical Training Wing, George AFB, California. Jim’s final assignment on active duty was a return to Langley AFB where he served as Deputy Commander for Operations of the 1st Air Force.  Over the course of his career, he would amass over 3600 hours of flight time in front line fighters. He is still known affectionally today by his call sign Racquet. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air Force Medal with seven oak leaf clusters. His dedication to the mission of the USAF, along with his passion and love for flying and aviation were evident throughout his distinguished career.

Following his retirement from active duty, Jim worked as a consultant for United Technologies. During his tenure there, he was integral to United Technologies and Pratt & Whitney winning the engine contract for the F-22 fighter.

Over the years, among other things, Jim enjoyed bowling, playing tennis, and golfing with friends and family. His most favorite thing to do by far, however, was to boat in his ever-changing and ever-getting-larger boats. Jim and his family spent countless hours of joy camping on the islands of Lake Martin in Alabama, water skiing on the Chickahominy River, and cruising on the Back River and in the Chesapeake Bay. He loved to take his grandchildren for boat rides and he specially loved the Fourth of July trips he planned up the Chesapeake Bay into the Potomac River with his son and sons-in-law.

Jim married his true love, the former Kathleen Janiga of Lackawanna, New York on February 9, 1963. They met at the University of Buffalo and it was love at first sight for Jim. Following their wedding, they immediately began their Air Force adventure together, moving over 20 times that took them all over the country and Germany. Kathy was by his side at every turn providing love, guidance, prayers, patience, and never-ending support. Their love was true and rare. They raised four children together: Karen Bischoff (Bill), Christopher Hardenbrook (Tanya), Kimberly Brogan (Glenn), and Kirsten March (Jason).

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his children, Karen, Christopher, Kim, and Kirsten and their spouses; his ten cherished grandchildren: Claire and James (children of Karen); Nate and Olivia (children of Chris); Sam, Anna, and Lily (children of Kim); and Chloe, Abby, and Brody (children of Kirsten); his beloved brother, Ed, and sister-in-law, Pam; his older sister Mary Lou; his nephew Louis, and many other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest sister Nancy.

A funeral Mass will be held at the Bethel Manor Chapel located at 1793 First Street, Hampton, Va. 23665 on July 7, 2026 at 1 p.m. Formal burial with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
