Denny Ferguson Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Denny Ferguson, who departed this world on June 26, 2026, at the age of 83, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 12, 1942, in Hampton, Virginia, Denny was the youngest child of Edward Ellison and Bertha Insley Ferguson, whose lives preceded him in eternity along with his siblings Dorothy Ferguson Topping, William Edward Ferguson, Sr., Evangeline Ferguson Quinn, Macycle Ferguson Cook, and Dora Ferguson Ottofaro. Denny grew up in the close-knit community of Poquoson, Virginia, where he graduated from Poquoson High School in 1960. He further honed his skills at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Apprentice School. His dedication and craftsmanship led him to a rewarding career at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, where he eventually retired after many years of devoted service. On September 11, 1964, Denny married the love of his life, Shirley Moore Ferguson. Their union was a beautiful testament to love and partnership, spanning an incredible 61 years. Together, they nurtured a family filled with laughter, warmth, and unwavering support. Denny is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Shirley, his cherished daughter Sandra Ferguson-Smith and her husband Mike, his dear sister Loretta Ferguson Haney, and his sister-in-law Lee Moore Evans and her husband Billy. His legacy continues through his special nieces and nephews, Teresa Evans Henley and her husband Troy, Ronald Lee Evans, and Sarah Ann Evans, who all held a special place in his heart. Denny was a true Bull Islander, a proud son of Poquoson, who found joy in gathering with friends at Messick Point. Known for his quick wit, he always had a joke and a smile ready to brighten any room. His humor and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone he met, creating memories that will be cherished forever. In honor of Denny's wishes, there will not be a ceremony. As we bid farewell to a remarkable husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, we remember Denny for his generous spirit, his laughter that was as infectious as it was genuine, and the love he shared so freely with those fortunate enough to know him.
