Edwin "Ed" Sloate Obituary

Edwin “Ed” Sloate, a devoted husband, father, and faithful servant of God, went home to be with the Lord on November 7, 2025. He was deeply loved by everyone blessed to know him.

Born and raised in Newport News, Ed was a proud graduate of Warwick High School (Class of 1961) and The Apprentice School (Class of 1966). Over the years, he worked at the Shipyard and NASA before owning and operating his own business, Ed Sloate’s Custom Home Repair, where his dedication, craftsmanship, and honesty earned him the trust and respect of many. He made his home in Poquoson, where he resided with his family for more than 50 years.

Ed was a hardworking man who loved his family fiercely and provided for them with unwavering devotion. His faith, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A lifelong member of Northside Christian Church, Ed faithfully served for more than 60 years. His faith guided every part of his life, and he lived it daily through kindness, generosity, and a deep love for others.

He was known for his generous heart and humble spirit—always ready to lend a hand or offer encouragement. Ed found great joy in sending cards and notes to lift others up and remind them they were cared for. Every holiday and special occasion, he made sure people felt remembered.

One of Ed’s greatest joys was umpiring for Little League. He loved being on the field with the kids, cheering them on, and ensuring the games were fun and fair. It was just another way he gave back to his community and shared his kind heart.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Tyna (Pierre); his beloved cat, Alex; his co-worker and son, Eric Brown; his sister-in-law, Lil Shortridge-Baggett (Walter); his brother-in-law, John Shortridge; his bonus son, Matt Mosier; and his bonus grandchildren, Zi, Luke, and Abbie Mosier. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Kenny Woolard; Irene Dethlefs (Mike); Ron Shortridge (Mary); Rick Shortridge (Kim); Rob Shortridge (Kris); Laura Baggett; Melissa Nguyen (Trung); and Larry Sloate (Angie); and his great-nieces and great-nephews: David Allen, Marsha Emerson, Matt Shortridge, Megan Shortridge, Mindy Shortridge, Elissa Shortridge, Paul Shortridge, Hope Shortridge, Caleb Sloate, and Carolyn Sloate.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ethel Sloate; his wife of 56 years, Hazel Sloate; his sister, Marsha Woolard; his brother, Kermit Sloate; his bonus daughter, Jenny Mosier; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law: Harold, Harlis, Rosalie, Madge, and Dave.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Northside Christian Church in Yorktown, VA, on Saturday, November 22, at 10:00 a.m., with Larry Lamb officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Ed by doing what he did best—showing kindness to someone in need—or by donating to Northside Christian Church, Peninsula SPCA, or the East Carolina University Alumni Association.
