Frederick Riggins Obituary

Frederick James Riggins, of Poquoson, Virginia, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on March 17, 2022 and has been reunited with his sweetheart of 54 years, Barbara.
Fred is survived by his brother, Hunter Riggins; his children, Sarah Brown (Kelly), Rebecca Brown (Brad), and Hunter Riggins; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kenna, and Matthew Brown; Jack, Darcy, and Brooks Brown; Gavin House; Paisley and James Cox. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Riggins and his parents, Malvern Hunter Riggins, Sr. and Nannie Forrest Riggins.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Poquoson. He graduated from Poquoson High School and the University of Virginia, and he remained, to the last, a Bull Islander and devoted Wahoo. His biggest joy in life, other than spending time with grandchildren, was his enthusiasm and passion for UVA sports which was legendary among all that knew him. We can all honor Fred by thinking of him and raising a glass when we sing “The Good Ole Song”.

Before beginning his extensive banking career, Fred served his country in the United States Army. He was an avid golfer and shared many golfing vacations with his beloved wife, who also shared his passion for the sport. Fred will always be remembered for his eagerness to help people, wit, laugh, inquisitive spirit about education, deep faith, and love of family.

A very special thank you to Dr. John Kessler of Virginia Oncology Associates and his staff for giving the family extra time together over the years. Another thank you to Dr. Charles Phillips of Bruton Avenue Family Practice for his kindness, consistency and compassion. Lastly, a most heartfelt thank you to his niece, Nancy Macon Riggins Wilkinson, for her tender and devoted care during Fred’s final days.
