George Nellos Obituary

George Paul Nellos, 90, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, after a brief illness at The Chesapeake Health Care Center in Newport News, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Riggins Nellos of Newport News, VA; his sister, Constance Nellos (David Ferrari) of Carson City, NV; his grandchildren, Chelsey Nellos and Heather Eckstine of Virginia Beach, VA; his son-in-law, Robert Eckstine of Hampton, VA and several cousins, nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, Paul George and Helen (Plosinski) Nellos; his daughter, Julie Marie Eckstine, and his sister, Irene Myers.

Born in Boston, MA, on March 9, 1936, to Paul George and Helen (Plosinski) Nellos, George grew up in Worcester, MA and attended Worcester Boys' Trade High School.

At age 18, he enlisted in the Air Force and began a 20-year career that included fireman, refrigeration and air conditioning, cryogenics, and concluded as loadmaster on a C130. He was honorably discharged in 1973 with a rank of TSgt. He ended his career as a lead construction inspector of the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Monroe, VA.

He began volunteering when he joined the Poquoson Exchange Club and worked on many community projects. He drove disabled vets to their DAV appointments. He volunteered for 20 years at the LAFB hospital pharmacy.

Retirement brought the chance to see the USA. Their RV gave them a chance to travel with friends and make new ones along the way. George enjoyed golfing, tennis, snow skiing with the Peninsula Ski Club, and going to a gym whenever he could.  In his later years, he cherished his Tuesday lunches at Mr. C’s with his golfing buddies where he was known for his quick wit and humorous stories.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 2 to 4 PM at the Poquoson Yacht Club (417 Messick Rd., Poquoson, VA).

Continuing his service to veterans, donations may be made to the disabled American veterans at (dav.org).
