Gerald Wayne Hopkins, 70, of Poquoson, VA, passed away on Saturday May 20, 2023 surrounded by his children, grand-children, and wife of 37 years, Cathy Hopkins. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother Lydia Avis Hopkins, his father Edward Raymond Hopkins and his brothers Butch Hopkins and Kenneth Hopkins.
Jerry dedicated his career to his work as a Master Electrician at the Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA. Prior to, he was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a graduate of the Vocational-Technical School in Hampton, VA. Jerry was also a member of the Peninsula Junior Chamber of Commerce (JAYCEES), formerly serving as president of the Poquoson chapter, and a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics.
To many, Jerry was known for his musical talents which he shared throughout the greater Hampton Roads region and music community. He was a lover of the outdoors, whether it be working in the yard, taking long walks with his wife, or taking the boat out on the Poquoson River with his family. Sports also played an active role in his life from his days on the varsity football team at Poquoson High School to playing golf on the weekends.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Suzanne Hopkins, his daughter, Rebecca Lynn Wade (son-in-law Andrew), and son, Sean Robert Hopkins (Juliane); sister, Kimberly Deibler (brother-in-law Brian), and brother, Doug Hopkins. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Anderson Joseph Wade and Charlotte Lydia Wade, who always brought a smile to his face.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12 noon. For those unable to attend the service you may pay your respects at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home between the hours of 2 - 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The family will not be present.
Friends and family are invited, after the service, to take part in a reception at the home of Jerry and Cathy Hopkins in Poquoson.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donation be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church or the Poquoson Education Foundation.
