JoAnne L'Herault Messick

JoAnne L’Herault Messick, 94, long time resident of Poquoson, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2022 following a final day spent with loving and caring members of her family.  
JoAnne was born July 25, 1927, in Minneapolis, MN to Napoleon and Della L'Herault.  After leaving her hometown, her life was filled with adventures in San Diego and New York City before she came to call Poquoson, Virginia “home”, a place she raised her loving children and enjoyed numerous warm friendships.  Creative and resourceful, JoAnne enjoyed wood working, gardening and sports while often cheering for her children’s success.  She retired from Civil Service – Fort Eustis following more than three decades of dedicated service and was a charter member of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic community where she sang in the church choir.         
JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Thomas Messick, Jr.; son, Jerry Messick; step-daughter, Sharon M. Johnson; grandson, Colin Messick; brothers, Edward L'Herault and Gerald L'Herault; and sisters, Natalie Wilson, Muriel Orme, and Audre Kerrigan.
She is survived by her sons, Tom (Gretchen) Messick and Craig (Debbie) Messick; daughters, Muriel (Scott) Millar and Mary Kay (Bill) Widhelm; daughter-in-law, Barbara Messick; stepson-in-law, Archie Johnson; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.
A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 24, at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
