John L. Foster, 78, passed away on July 1, 2026.

Born on September 7, 1947, John was a native of Poquoson, Virginia, and had been a resident of Dillwyn, Virginia, for the past ten years.

John proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of E-5 and was awarded the Purple Heart and Vietnam Combat Ribbon for his service.

Following his military service, John worked in Project Management at NASA until his retirement on April 1, 2011.

John could work on just about anything and get it right…eventually. He enjoyed teaching his children how to shoot, fish, hunt, and live strong. He loved camping, fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle and go-karts, spending time around a campfire, and relaxing with a good Bloody Mary. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his children, granddaughter, and helping his neighbors or anyone who needed it.

John was preceded in rest by his father, John J. Foster; his mother, Evelyn Foster; his brother, Tommy Haight; and his nephew, Tally Cook.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Traci Foster; daughters, Jessica Foster and Heather Smith and son-in-law, Scott Smith; granddaughter, Gemma Smith; sister, Earleen Oroark; brother, James Foster; and dear friends, Donnie Oakley, Larry Eicher, Bill Ruehl, and M.C. Moore.

A celebration of life will be held at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, officiated by Buddy Chapman.
