Joseph James Panuska, 79, of Newport News, Va passed away on May 17, 2023 surrounded by his family. Joe was born on October 13, 1943 to the late Charles and Abbie Panuska of Dillonvale, Ohio. He attended Dillonvale High School where he was a member of the football team and school band. Upon graduation, Joe attended The Allied Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he received a Bachelor of Technology in Tool and Manufacturing Engineering.
Following graduation, he moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he became a designer at Newport News Shipbuilding. For a period of time, he worked as a designer for John J. McMullen before returning to the Shipyard where he remained until his retirement.
Joe was an adamant hunter and fisherman while enjoying time with family and friends at the cottage. He enjoyed spending time with his children and assisting in church activities. Joe loved being with his grandchildren and supporting them at their school performances and sporting events. He was always up for talking about The Ohio State football teams chances for that year. His weekly card games and trips to Rosie’s were something he looked forward to every week.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Abbie Panuska and brother Richard “Dick” Panuska. He is survived by his daughters Tammy Spence, Chrissy Beagle (son-in-law Michael), grandchildren Ella, Ayden, Adelynn, Marley and Waylon, sister-in-law JoAnn Panuska and nephew/godson Dr. Rich Panuska (niece-in-law Neda).
Visitation will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1209 Country Club Road, Newport News followed by a funeral service. Interment will immediately follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12759 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News.
The family will be receiving family and friends at a reception following the graveside service at Grace United Methodist Church.
