Michael Wayne Hales

Michael (Mike) was originally from Hampton, Va. before he moved to Poquoson, Va. around 2005. It was about this time he became owner/operator of CBC Small Engine Repair. Mike had a deep passion for his lawnmower racing team, Zero Tolerance Racing. As the leader of the team, they achieved a great deal of success. The wins are too numerous to count, and the championships were many.

Mike enjoyed taking his motorcycle out for long rides. He expressed the freedom and stress free feeling he got from the cruising. He expressed the same feeling for fishing and wished he was able to do both more frequently.

Michael is preceded in death by his beloved wife Judy Cupp (2019), His sister Donna Oltarzewski (2017), and his father Thomas Hales (1997).

Mike is survived by his mother Mary L. (Cook) Campbell of Hampton, Va., his brothers Curtis E. Hales of Hampton, Va., and Darryl K. Hales of Pelzer, SC, and sister Whitney Queen of Hampton, Va. Mike had two nephews Jesse Hales of Leesburg, Va., Zachary Hales of Pelzer, SC, and a niece Kandyce (Hales) Carver of Pickens, SC

Michael’s best friend and sidekick K9 Tonka passed away on January 25, 2023. Two peas in a pod if ever could be had.

Michael was a close friend and mentor to Ryan Fisher. Ryan entered Mike’s life at a very early age. Through some tough love, encouragement, and understanding Mike and Ryan bonded closer than a father and son.

Although Michael had no blood children, he had Melissa Delarosa. The one child that entered his life as a baby and steamrolled his heart and stayed there forever. Michael’s love for Melissa was stronger than words can express. Melissa was his daughter; in every way one could wish a daughter could be.

A visitation will be held on March 11, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home.
