Nancy Chilcoat Overton Smith, 68, died unexpectedly on July 22, 2026. Nancy was the daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Nelson T. Overton of Hampton. She is survived by her husband Stephen King Smith of 33 years whom she had faithfully taken care of since his heart attack. She is also the mother of Christine Abigail “Abby” Smith Brundage (Cole) and the Grammy to Cole Smith Brundage. Nancy was always taking care of their needs before hers and making sure they had what they needed for the day or occasion. Nancy always said that Abby was her full-time job and that her 30 years as a juvenile probation officer with the 8th District Court Service Unit was her part-time job. Also in the home were the two cats, Patch and Baby. Nancy was a 1976 graduate of Hampton High School and a 1980 graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nancy was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads, and a prior member of the Kecoughtan Literary Circle and the Hampton Roads Garden Club. Nancy was kind, gracious, and always coordinated. Per Nancy’s wishes there will be no service. She just wants everyone to go out and buy the cutest shoes they can find and wear them happily.
