Nicole Layne (Newsome) Hudgins

   Nicole Layne Hudgins, 55 years-old of Poquoson departed this world to join the Lord on February 4th, 2022. Nicole was a graduate of Poquoson High School, class of 1984. She participated in a variety of activities to include Cheer, Pom Pom team and many of the school plays as an actress.  At an early age, Nicole cheered for the youth football teams, unknowingly at the time supporting her future husband, Chuck, who was on the field.  She enjoyed the simple things: Bonnie Belle Lip Gloss, Mint chocolate chip ice cream, Kraft Macaroni, long drives, and time at the beach in the family camper.  When she wasn’t outdoors, she loved watching The Price Is Right and she learned how to play the saxophone. In 1975, Nicole and McCord got Baptized together at Emmaus Baptist church…New life with Christ.

   Nicole is reunited in Heaven with her Father & Mother Al & Beverly Newsome.

   Her memory is cherished by her husband, Chuck; three sons, Ryan (Faith), Jacob (Peyton), and Andrew (Emily); brother, McCord and wife Belky’s and their sons, Simon and Brandon. 

   Nicole graduated from Christopher Newport University in 1990 with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and accepted a position as Pre-school Director at First Baptist Church in Norfolk. After a career in education, she was proud to follow in her Mother’s footsteps in investment banking with Capital Group and then moving on with Wells Fargo Investors.  She passed her Series 7 and Series 66 Test acquiring some of her mother’s clientele.  One of Nicole’s greatest achievements was becoming cancer free in November of 2021. 

   Her charitable spirit was apparent in the time she spent as a Foster Parent to infant babies.  Her compassion for all creatures was undeniable. She adored her dogs, cats, and even her pet rabbit, She even involved herself in the stages of Monarch butterflies with safe cover. She had a green thumb, adding character to her home and loved taking care of her lemon and lime bushes.

   Nicole took much pride in her three sons: Ryan graduating from the Fire Academy and obtaining his Medic certification.  Jacob’s acceptance into the NNS Apprentice School as a welder.  And Andrew completing the Coast Guard Academy boot camp and working on an Ice Breakers in Michigan.  She was ecstatic to find out that she would be a grandmother to a baby girl named Isabella Nicole Blankenship.

   June 21,2013, she met the man she’d spend the rest of her life with, Chuck Hudgins. He then asked her to be his wife on Christmas Day in 2019, and they were wed on December 19, 2020. They found their home in Hilton Village. 

   Nicole was diagnosed with C.M.M.L Leukemia in March of 2021. She had her Bone Marrow Transplant on September 14, 2021. On November 23, 2021, Her Bone Marrow Transplant Biopsy came back as Cancer free. 

   A visitation will be held Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home from 2:00 – 3:30 PM. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown at 7:00 PM presided over by Pastor Doug Echols. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to P.A.W.S. – Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary.
