Richard Vernard Wood

Poquoson – Richard Vernard Wood, 76 passed on to his heavenly home on Saturday, April 15, 2023.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Marvin & Florence Wood.  He grew up on a farm in Botetourt County, Virginia.  He had such fond memories of his farm days; he would often remind us of how he would wake up with snow on his blanket that had blown through the cracks of the wall when we complained about being cold.  He moved to the east coast in the summer of 1967 when he accepted a job at the Shipyard and that is where he met the love of his life while carpooling.  Linnie drove up in her mustang and mini skirt and he was smitten.  They were married in June of 1968 and built a beautiful life together.  He was an active member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and deacon.  He had a passion for sharing Christ with others.  If you knew Richard, you certainly heard about his savior. He is preceded in death by his wife Linnie, parents and seven siblings.  He is survived by his daughters, LeAnne Byrum (Don), Jessica Davis (Jeremy) and Richina White (Ken). He loved his grandchildren, Hillary Byrum (Mike), Alexa Byrum (Josh), Gwen Wood, Christopher Davis, Allison Davis, Alyssa White and brand-new great-grandson Mason. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.  We will celebrate his life on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 11:00am at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton with Dr. Brian Williams officiating.  The family will receive friends starting at 10:00am.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in Richard’s memory to the Annie Armstrong Easter offering at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, 2200 Coliseum Drive, Hampton VA 23666.
