Mr. Dick Burnett, age 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, with his family by his side. A native of Illinois, Dick was a resident of Poquoson for the past 68 years. He loved his community and it was reflected in the many ways he served. In 1996 he retired from Noland Company after 48 years of service as a top performing salesman.
Dick was a loyal member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Poquoson Masonic Lodge #49, a 32nd Degree, AASR and a member of Khedive Shrine.
He was a veteran of the Korean War which is what brought him to the area where he met the love of his life, Mary. It wasn’t long before his son, Dean, came along. A more involved father it will be hard to find as he immersed himself in Dean’s various activities. He served Cub Scout Pack 51, Trinity UMC, was Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 28, Tabernacle UMC and later served as Commissioner of Peninsula Boy Scouts. Dick also served as President of the Poquoson Little League and was active in the Babe Ruth League.
As Dean’s interests progressed, Dick was right there with him. He was active and past president of the Poquoson Band Boosters, often accompanying the Islander Band on their trips. Dick served on City Council and was a member of the School Board. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed camping, photography and spending time with his family.
Mr. Burnett was preceded in rest by his wife of 63 years, Mary Thomas Burnett, as well as his mother, Helen Claypool and father, Herbert Pleasant Burnett. Also preceding him were brothers, Herbert, Benjamin and Jerald and sisters-in-law Agnes and Sarah Burnett. Surviving him are his son, R. Dean Burnett, Jr and wife, Susan Pauls Burnett; grandson, Michael Dean Burnett and wife Christina Mollenauer Burnett, and great-grandson, Henry Dean Burnett. Also surviving him are his sister, Dorothy B. Stratton (Delmar); brothers Harold and William, and multiple nieces and nephews.
