Robert Samuel Wheless, “Mr. Bobby”, a long time resident of Poquoson, passed away August 14, 2019 surrounded by family and friends. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, retired civil service, Co-owner of Wheless House and most recently an employee of City of Poquoson school system. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and attended Keep the Promise Ministries.
Mr. Wheless was preceded in death by his wife Sara; granddaughter, Cori; grandson, Derek; parents Naomi and Bill Wheless . He is survived by his daughters Donna Evans (David Lynn), Rhonda Johnson (Lee), Barbara Peterson and Sandra Gibbs (Floyd)., grandchildren Tyler, Savannah (David), Carmen (Joseph), Jami, Angel (Lee), Sydney, April, Bobby, Chase, Melody (Nathaniel) and great grandchildren Cheyenne, Calleigh, Claire, Paxton and Gammon, sisters Billie Neil and Ann Wilson, brother in law Bob Insley, Jr. and wife Edith; his friend and companion, Gracie Sivertson and her family, his beloved nieces and nephews and extended North Carolina family, his best "bud" Trent Joyner and his family and loyal and loving dog, Molly.
Mr. Bobby participated in many organizations. He was a Life Member of Poquoson Volunteer Fire Department, member of American Legion Post 273, Poquoson Masonic Lodge No. 49, and Knights of Pyhtias. He was honored to serve as Grand Marshall of the Poquoson Christmas Parade and Mr. Bobby loved his “breakfast club” buddies.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends often sharing jokes, stories and a hug. He never met a stranger. He loved gardening and growing roses. Mr. Bobby was known for his homemade biscuits; delivering them around town. Coaching, playing, and watching softball was his passion. Mr. Bobby was a huge Washington Redskin, Mountaineer and Poquoson Athletics fan. You would frequently find him at Poquoson Sporting Events; often assuming the position of official greater and referee/umpire. He enjoyed every game until thrown out!
Mr. Bobby enjoyed chewing “Big Duke” tobacco using his “red cup”, smoking a big fat cigar, dancing, telling jokes and stories, playing poker, watching game shows, drawing, listening to classic country and gospel music. He loved hot dogs, homemade ice cream, banana pudding, milkshakes, La Choy Chicken Chow Mein, and Smitty’s Better Burgers.
Mr. Bobby may not have invested in stocks and bonds but he invested in people and he loved unconditionally. In his opinion this was a much greater return on your investment with no risk.
A celebration of his life with Military Honors and Mason Rights will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1924 Poquoson Ave by Pastor Buddy Chapman with visitation to immediately follow the service at the church. In lieu of a graveside service, the family would like to invite you to the Poquoson Municipal Park for a “Farewell at the Field” tribute to Mr. Bobby. Friends may call upon the family at all other times at the home of his daughter, Donna Evans, 1122 Poquoson Ave, Poquoson.
