Ruth Kimbrough Burdge

Ruth Kimbrough Burdge (born Genevieve Ruth Kimbrough on August 31, 1964) passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved ones, on October 1st, 2024. Her transition into the afterlife comes after a valiant, decade-long battle against breast cancer, throughout which she exhibited her characteristic bravery, grace, and indomitable spirit. She is survived by her husband, James Burdge; her daughter, Molly Giffin; her stepchildren, Jimmy Burdge and Jessica Kramer; her siblings Karen Lowry and Doug Kimbrough; and her dearly cherished grandbabies, Grant and Audrey Kramer. Furthermore, she will be sorely missed by her nephew, Carey Kimbrough; her nieces Liz Lowry and Sarah Silva; the employees of the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office; and the countless others who she so selflessly took under her wing (affectionately called her ‘degenerates’). Ruth received a B.A. in Political Science from James Madison University, and a J.D. from The University of Richmond. For over two decades, she served as a prosecutor for the city of Newport News, specializing in domestic violence and crimes against children. She was honored to devote her life and career to fighting for justice and took immense pride in the impact her work had on the vulnerable and downtrodden. She was enamored with all things tie-dye and was an avid music lover, with particular fondness for The Rolling Stones and Modest Mouse. She will be warmly greeted in the next life by her beloved son, Tyler Giffin.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on October 12th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, 836 Poquoson Avenue, Poquoson, VA. Casual attire (preferably tie-dye) is encouraged.
