Salvatore Michael Cannella Sr., “Sal,” 83, born August 27, 1942, in Manhattan, passed away on May 31, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gasper and Gilda Cannella, sister Jenny Dimino, brother, Michael, and the love of his life, his wife of 51 years, Theresa Elizabeth “Terry” Cannella. Sal was a loving brother, uncle, and father. His memory is cherished by his children, Salvatore, Jr., Richard Cannella and wife Natalie, Thomas Cannella and wife Danielle, Timothy Cannella and wife Shauna, Theresa Wright, John Cannella and wife Jennifer. He was most proud to be a grandfather to Sal III, Richie, Travis, Alyssa, Thomas, Lance, Alex, Justin, Emma, Abby, Will, Grace, Sydney, and Brandon; and great-grandchildren Sloane, Ellis, Brooks, and Sawyer.
Sal and Terry’s love story began in 1959 when they met in Forest Park in Queens, New York. After Sal’s retirement from the N.Y.P.D, he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees to pursue his career with the Department of Army. His journey took him to Poquoson, Va where he and his loving wife Terry raised their family and spoiled their grandchildren.
Sal will be remembered for his quick wit, jokes, cop stories, and his steadfast love and support for his family.
A memorial service will be held at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson at 1:00pm on Thursday, June 4, 2026. A private burial will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sal's memory may be made to the Poquoson Education Foundation at P.O. Box 2425, Poquoson, Virginia 23662.
