Thomas Michael Hartman, 70, of Poquoson went to be with the Lord on September 24, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with mesothelioma.
Tom was one of seven children born to Frank and Elizabeth Hartman of Hampton. He graduated from St. Vincent de Paul/Peninsula Catholic High School in 1970. In 1977, Tom founded Atlantic Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning - a business he led successfully for more than 45 years. He was known for his dedication to employees, and proud that Atlantic’s many customers around the Peninsula rated them #1 in the nation for customer satisfaction.
As a lifelong resident of Hampton Roads, Tom was an avid boater and fisherman. He survived a lightning strike in his late 40s (carrying around a hand buzzer for anyone who asked about it), labored for over 50 years in shipyards, attics, and crawlspaces, and worked daily in many homes despite a pandemic. His wisdom, pragmatism, energy and friendship will be missed by many.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Bernard, David, and Frank. Tom is survived by his siblings, Robert of Houston, Jimmy of Newport News, and Peggy Nettles (Bill) of Seaford; his children, Ryan (Meghann) of Bellaire, Lauren Hodges (Ted) of Raleigh, Jordan of Newport News, and Kristen Wolf (Brock) of Charlotte; his former spouse and mother of his children, Colleen Hartman of Poquoson; and his partner of five years, Tammy Deramo of Poquoson.
Tom had a passion for many local organizations, such as the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation, St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Churches, Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern VA., American Cancer Society, Hampton and Newport News Community Services Board, Transitions Family Violence Services, Poquoson Education Foundation, VersAbility Resources, and the Exchange Club of Wythe. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to them. Tom donated his body for medical research through the VA. State Anatomical Program.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 22, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hampton.
